Join the Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS) in our new performance venue for a series exploring Klezmer Connections in a monthly installment, curated by Philadelphia-based trombonist, composer, and premier Klezmer practitioner, Dan Blacksberg.

The series features a selection of artists who each offer unique insight into Klezmer music and sounds, both new and traditional, creating a crossroads of offerings where connections can be made.

Sunday, 9/23: Susan Watts Band & Community Jam | 2:30pm Doors / 3pm Music

An Afternoon of Philly Klezmer: Nothing says “Philly Klezmer” like Susan Hoffman Watts, acclaimed purveyor of traditional klezmer sounds passed through generations of family, now giving voice to newgenerations of Jewish music in Philadelphia. Along with a performance, enjoy a community jam (“bring & sing!”) and potluck (snacks and beverages to share strongly encouraged).

Sunday, 10/21: Joey Weisenberg Community Sing | 4pm Doors / 4:30pm Music

Afternoon Sing-A-Long: Join Joey Weisenberg, Creative Director of Hadar’s Rising Song Institute, for a community gathering bringing people together to connect through the power of music. Using melodies drawn from Jewish and American folk music, Weisenberg uses shared musical experiences to find and foster inner musical potenential. Along with the community sing, enjoy a potluck (snacks and beverages to share strongly encouraged).

Saturday, 11/3: Tsibele | 7:30pm Doors / 8pm Music

Klezmer Sounds of Resistance:Tsibele is a band led by women, queer and non-binary musicians that plays Moldovan/Bessarabian music and the music of Jewish migrants from Europe to America. Their repertoire features songs with a liberatory message found through archival research and the work of ethnographers like Eleanor Mlotek, Ethel Raim, Ruth Rubin. At a time of political upheaval around questions of gender and immigration, this show is not-to-be-missed.

Saturday, 12/15: Radiant Others and Judith Berkson & Michael Winograd | 7:30pm Doors / 8pm Music

New Sounds in Jewish Music: Haimish Harmonies wraps up with a broad look at cutting-edge players uniting for an adventurous program where familiar sounds take audiences to new places. Radiant Others, led by Klezmer trombone master Dan Blacksberg, reimagines traditional music with trombone at the forefront, bringing the instrument beyond its traditional accompaniment role and into the spotlight. Judith Berkson (piano/voice) & Michael Winograd (clarinet), two leading voices in a new generation of Klezmer, create inventive takes on traditional music with sublime results.
